ABOUT THIS PAINTING

“The Liberation of St. Peter” depicts St. Peter in prison. I sought to illustrate the inner turmoil St. Peter must have experienced during his imprisonment, as well as to show God’s dominance over earthly power. Was he wrestling with reality or had he accepted his execution as being God’s will? It is written that the angel, “struck Peter on the side and woke him saying, ‘Get up quickly’.” Here we see Peter startled awake and beholding the heavenly creature. We see the shackles broken from his wrists, and the angel gesturing towards the light. This story displays God’s powerful will, which breaks down walls, and opens barred gates in order to fulfill his providential plan. God sent his messenger to release Peter from prison and lead him onto the path of light. God, in his mercy, desires to deliver each of us from our prisons, liberating us from situations which inhibit us from carrying out his will.
